The memory of some friendships often supersedes the reality of the connection. There are friends that I hold dear, like an old trinket — faded but favorable. It seems though, as I grow from the suckling seed into an overgrowing fern , they would like to see my budding leaves reduced. So, I am forced to leave some connections where they began. I often see debates online about women wearing makeup , women dressing up, whether or not we look better without it. All types of opinions on how we dress, what we do, and its relation to humility and so on. I remember watching a show where a woman stated that her doing her hair and makeup was a part of her armor whenever she walked out into the world. Her taking the time to admire herself in the mirror and decorate the parts that she didn’t feel so proud of helped her to go out and be strong in a world that is constantly trying to tear women down. It was almost war paint to her. A way to engulf herself in adornments and trinkets, like decorating a temple.

And we are temples , goddesses , queens … we deserve adornment , even if only we do it for ourselves ✨

Things I learned through self publishing my book *So Far*

🦋 Take your time : You don’t have to rush your process. I thought I would have my book done in a month. The month turned into a year, mostly because I wasn’t sure how to go about publishing. After a little research, I was able to create something that I was proud to present.

🦋Have Fun: you should be enjoying the creative process of creating your book. If you aren’t, it’s time to take a break, step back, and remember why you started writing in the first place.

🦋 Ask questions , Rely on the writing community: i wore the hat of publisher , writer , and artist while creating this book and the title of “editor” wore off pretty quickly as I neared completion of the book. I had a lovely poet (@poeticalstanley ) offer to read through my initial manuscript for anything I may have missed while editing , it was really helpful and made me aware of some repetitive mistakes I was making while writing the book. I also gained useful information for my final copy of the book which included an additional 100+ poems.

🦋 You will ALWAYS be needing to promote your book however you can when self publishing. Social media will be important , but it’s okay if you aren’t extremely social media savvy . Find alternative ways of promoting your book, like posters in your neighborhood , asking for features in local libraries/bookshops etc. going to live poetry reading events. Research the ways you will feel the most comfortable marketing your book. I keep a copy of my book with me wherever I go so I can take promo photos in interesting areas. You never know where you’ll find a spot to take an aesthetically pleasing photo of your book or where you could drop it off for others to enjoy and get familiar with you as an author.

Human beings are not the only ones affected by these events , wildlife, state parks , businesses, have also been greatly affected by the fires 🙏🏾

Having your book in your hand after a year of writing and editing is an incredible feeling. It’s something I really waited for and now I’m just lingering in the realities of being a published author 🌼

I started writing to deal with feeling silenced and unheard. When I started writing poetry and I decided to share it on social media I never imagined publishing a book— it wasn’t on my radar, but I got so many nudges and notes of encouragement to go for it—so I did, and I don’t regret it ✨

When I first got my book in the mail and opened the package to see the fruits of my labor (final version) I squealed in joy and excitement. I changed the cover 4 times and I refused to settle until it felt right. I added, swapped, and removed poems until it felt like a true collection. I’m so happy that I didn’t rush this, that I didn’t go with the first version just to get it out. It feels like a part of me that I get to share with all of you , and it feels right 🩷

One thing that I think most of us as poets can agree on is that we started writing from a place of lack , sadness , grief — a grasp at release or freedom from some kind of emotional bind. Personally , poetry came to me as a form of therapy when I felt my voice was being muffled, when I felt my words were unheard.

I started writing after experiencing things that left a stain on my psyche and left me feeling traumatized. I felt so much, but I couldn’t find the right words to express the overwhelming sense of grief and betrayal that I was experiencing.

I almost pitied you because that’s just what I do when people betray me. I think about what they’ve gone through, I think about how much they must hate the idea of joy and happiness for me because they fear they may never truly find it. I convince myself that they are somehow worthy of grace, and I am not. I feel awful for them. I feel shameful for standing up. So, I sit and listen to lies. I forget about their eager itching at me. Their tender turns and twists. I forget about the daggers in the back and the blood-soaked lies. I end up feeling bad for them — I don’t know why.
